Iraq Sanctions Knowledge Base
Do you think that the economic sanctions on Iraq weakened the Iraqi regime some how? was the economic sanctions an effective measure to take against the government? what would be the other solutions? Was the U.S the main responsible for that more than the U.N? It is an interesting subject for me because it has huge affect on the civilian life and butchered 500,000 children in a very horrific way. If there is any helpful links about the economic sanctions in Iraq, then that would be great! Thanks in advance
Are there still Sanctions on Iraq? Do all the old sanctions and treaties/agreements which prohibit Iraq from having a navy and air force still apply to the New Republic? only answer if you know for sure.
Why didn't America lift the sanctions on Iraq after Saddam destroyed his WMD? Everyone now admits there is no evidence of Iraq having any WMD after 1991, when it complied with the UN resolution to destroy its WMD and provide proof that it did so. Everyone on the Security Council wanted to accept that proof and lift the sanctions. Except the United States and Britain, which wanted to keep the WMD issue alive and eventually used it as a pretext to invade Iraq in 2003. The problem is, those sanctions killed over one million Iraqis, including over half a million children. Aren't the US and Britain responsible for those deaths?
my question about Iraq is what about the sanctions? were they working or not? you know roughly 500,000 iraqis mostly children died as a result of those. it is a tricky and well neglected issue. so you are saying 500,000 iraqis died for nothing? and this went on for 10 years and U.S. official were oblivious to it's ineffectiveness?

If you're against the war, how do you feel about 10 years of economic sanctions against Iraq? - In as much as the economic sanctions were designed to topple Saddam they were a failure, however the sanctions caused the death of between 400 000 and 800 000 Iraqi children -The sanctions crippled the Iraqi economy during the time they were imposed; much of Iraq’s infrastructure ran into disrepair from lack of materials -On May 10, 1996, appearing on 60 Minutes, Madeleine Albright (then U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations) was presented with a figure of half a million children under five having died from the sanctions. Not challenging this figure, she infamously replied "we think the price is worth it" Since the sanctions amounted to quiet genocide, do you think it was easier for Americans to look the other way? Have you truly considered the state of Iraq prior to the latest war, and can you say honestly that they would be better off under the sanctions regime? BTW: The sanctions were lifted in 2003 after being in affect for 12 years and killing ~1.5M people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_sanctions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Iraq-infant-mortality.png So you admit you're against the war for purely selfish reasons and the welfare of the Iraqi people is no part of your calculation? Fair answer!
US Sanctions Iraq's 5th largest bank? The Bush administration plans to sanction Iraq's 5th largest bank, Bank Sepah because it has provided financial services to 2 "missile-developing" companies and North Korea. The unannounced sanction along with other actions against Iraq from the U.S. has already slowed down investments from many European and Asian banks. It has come across to the international community that doing business with Iraq is going to cost them. Do you think limiting Iraq's trade partners is a good, strategic decision?
Economic sanctions on Iraq? When were the U.S. sanctions against Iraq (during the Persian Gulf War) lifted? It says here http://www.crosscurrents.org/gordon.htm that they were still in place seven years after Iraq had withdrawn from Kuwait. Are they still in place now? History teacher please?
US Still Imposing Sanctions on Iraq? I never knew this, but I read on US treasure Department, that US still impose Sanctions on Iraq, block some assets, restrict trade, and also PROVIDE IMMUNITY FROM JUDICIAL PROCESS AGAINST ANY FUND OR PRODUCT ARISING OF SALE OF IRAQI PETROLEUM. (emphisize added). see here: http://www.ustreas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/iraq/iraq.shtml What do you think of this sanctions purpose, I don't think because of terroristm, especially, US removed completely the sanctions on Libya, a country that more likely will support terrorists at some point. Did u guys click on the link ever? moreover, I did not ask about UN sanctions, I m talking about US Sanctions. please look on the site of US treasure dept.
How many Iraqi children do you think died under the U.N. sanctions on Iraq from 1990-2003? What did those sanctions accomplish? How much longer do you think Iraq would have been kept under sanctions if not for the regime change? Some different sources. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1169290 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10866440 2003 March 8 "More than 3000 children are dying every week in Iraq as a result of the decade long embargo that was enforced on the country after its invasion of Kuwait, a new report says. It puts the total increase in the number of children who have died as a result of the embargo at around 1.6 million since 1990, with year on year increases." http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1169290 http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/iraq/sanctions.html I want to see more people answer this. People complain about the stupid questions then never answer ones that require thought. Nobody has answered my questions yet. :( Big Steve, reputable source to back your claim? Please tell me which country didn't have it's nose in Iraq's business after the first Gulf War after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Chris W, find another question to play on, 6 isn't a serious number and this is not a joke. curious, post what other options we had Ghost of Tom Joad, I'm still not seeing a source that only is counting children, nor am I seeing an answer to "What did those sanctions accomplish?" & "How much longer do you think Iraq would have been kept under sanctions if not for the regime change?" The liberation of France from the Nazi regime did not help the medical situation of France, so to me that is not valid justification for being against an effort to throw out a regime. Clearly the time before the regime change in Iraq was also a time filled with death and poor conditions. I think that sanctions were easier for people to ignore the ramifications of. The idea of lifting sanctions completely would have sent a message to dangerous regimes all over the world and relief for those sanctions opened us and the people of Iraq open for exploitation.
Political Strategy question. If Iran undergoes sanctions, will they be the next Iraq? Is the purpose of the sanctions to make the offending party weak enough on the inside that either A) they bow to demands B) civil unrest leads to a regime change or C) make them weak enough that in 10 to 20 years they are ripe for invasion? And what changes would allow Iran to be able to continue enriching uranium? Would they have to change to a democracy? Or are there other requirements?
Why have sanctions been imposed upon Iran for it's nuclear energy programme? I don't understand how the UN can justify sanctions upon Iraq yet other countries are alowed to pretty much do as they wish. What (in the opinion of the UN), makes it acceptable for some countries to have nuclear energy/weapons technology and for others (to have it) unacceptable? I was actually hoping for purely factual answers. I just don't understand why Iran is deemed to be more dangerous than some other countries. Surely it's best to judge a country by it's actions, not rhetoric. Please try and allow some debate and try not to resort to personal insults. Remember it's the people who suffer, not the political leaders. I don't see why they should suffer because of the actions of their leader. The same principle applies whichever country one talks about.
How is the War in Iraq part of the the War on Terror? There's no question that Hussein was a bad guy and deserved what he got. However, proof of Hussein's connections with Al Qaeda is, at best, only circumstantial, and in fact, Bin Laden probably wasn't a fan of Hussein since Hussein rejected Islamic fundamentalism, and ran Iraq as a secular state. UN sanctions effectively shut down any of Hussein's ability to support other terror groups. Sure, Iraq now is a breeding ground and magnet for terrorists, but don't you think our presence there, if it didn't create the problem, exacerbates it, especially when some of our troops use heavy handed tactics to root out insurgents (the squad leader in the Haditha incident stated in an interview on 60 Minutes that it is standard practice in clearing a house to toss a grenade into a room before entering it without thinking about whether there are innocents on the other side - albeit another expert said that's true only after you've confirmed there are bad guys on the other side of the door already shooting at you), or when our troops accept "collateral damage." One estimate indicates that a third of the 60,000 civilian fatalities since 2003 were caused by Coalition force, and that's not even the highest casualty tally out there. W says that we can't just pick up and leave Iraq now because Iraq is the front line of the War on Terror. Apparently I'm not the only one not seeing the connection here. Do you?
If people are so up in arms about the US invading iraq and Iraqi civilian causalties? Should we have just stuck with the sanctions like oil for food , and not have gone to war? I mean nearly 500,000 children did die of starvation without US forces attacking. That seemed to really make the people stand up against saddam right? In 1996 then-UN Ambassador Madeleine Albright was asked by 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl, in reference to years of U.S.-led economic sanctions against Iraq, “We have heard that half a million children have died. I mean, that is more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?” To which Ambassador Albright responded, “I think that is a very hard choice, but the price, we think, the price is worth it.” I doubt that saddam could have been removed without a single US force on the ground. Why would anyone with his kind of power and has had it for over 30 years just give it up? That question was asked in 1996 1996 nearly 500,000 people died those sanctions went on for another 7 years so total about 1.25million people died of starvation and lack of medical treatment while millions were mal nourished
Do you support Tougher Sanctions on Iran? or possibly war? With France recently calling for more sanctions and warning of a possible war with Iran, what are your thoughts? Sanctions in Iraq killed more than 1 million Iraqi children during the Clinton administration -according to UN estimates- and is cited by Bin Laden as one of the reasons for 911. Do you support sanctions, or should we join the EU and go to war? Can anyone here be so politically ignorant that they have to ask "for what?" We shall see.....
why is obama taking a page out of former president Jimmy Carter?sanctions as a threat to Iran? How naive is obama to think all of these things he is doing has never been tried before?Sanctions has never worked in all of its history, didn't worked when it was used against North Korea,Cuba,Iraq,Iran, red China! yet obama says if Iran is not open talks he will use what?SANCTIONS wooooooo! i feel safe already! the republicans thing was to prevent wars by waging smaller ones, now here the funny thing about what the poster said about losing billions and humans lives being a republican fault. If Bill zippergate Clinton,a DEMOCRAT would have kept his zipper up long enough to take out bin laden when America was offered bin laden by the talibans there wouldn't have been a 911 in the first place to have to solved therefore send those human lives to solve 10 yrs later to begin with,or if zippergate Bill Cliton had done what G.W.BUSH did by revamping the CIA AND FBI they would have caught a small group of terrorists ,sponsored by obama i mean osama bin laden, give them a gitmo style treatment ,find out osama was behind this threat get him while he was still available there would be no 911 thereby stopping the terrorists in their tracks but Bill was too busy getting monica to give him BJ to see pass his zipper and now who fault was it over all? A DEMOCRAT NOT A REPUBLICAN just like with the IRAN HOSTAG
Why are we imposing sanctions and warnings over Russia? We know it is useless. it has no impact on russia. Russia cares the least for our sanctions. It does not even care for UN. We have entered into iraq, afghanistan. We have entered into bosnia. we played all the tricks in breaking former USSR. why are we making enemies with the mighty Russia?
Is it time for the world to place sanctions on the US military? The US is out of control in Iraq and Afghanistan. Civilians are regularly bombed and innocents have their houses raided and are detained. US human rights abuses like torture continue to occur. Is it time to place sanctions against the rogue US military?
how much money has the Iraq war cost us as tax payers ? I feel tony blair has cost us our money and our integrity as a nation. many of my friends feel it was for the oil ,some of which is now controled by the P.K.K who are in the northen part of Iraq where the major oil fields are . And thats why Turkey is upset. If It wasnt for the oil, why havent we dealt with Mugabe ?Hes as bad as Saddam if not worse.saddam didnt cripple his country sanctions did that.
How many people have died in Iraq? Is there an objective measurement on how many people have died in Iraq as a consequence of the war and also as a consequence of the sanctions leading up to the war. Is there an objective measurement on how many people have died in Iraq as a consequence of the war and also as a consequence of the sanctions leading up to the war. I'm looking for a real answer, please don't spam with answer such as 'too many' or 'millions'.
Can someone please tell me in clear and precise words what is the mission of the US military in Iraq? was it to disarm Iraq? They were already more or less disarmed after over 10 years of sanctions. was it to topple Saddam? Why should that be any of US buisness, and they could have done so covertly, they had many chances like when his sons in law and his daughters defected? was it to find WMDs? ha ha ha Was it to free Iraqis? again ha ha ha from Abu Gharib under Saddam to Abu Gharib under US military, from rape by his regime to rape by the US military, from hunger to more hunger. what was it then, it is important for the our troops and our people to have a clear cut mission where we all can stand behind it.
Would you be in favor of pulling our troops from Iraq and sending them to Myanmar to liberate its people? I know there's no oil over there, but if Americans are as serious about spreading freedom, democracy, and human rights around the world as they claim to be, surely the Burmese people need our help as much or more than the Iraqis? How about if we pull our troops from Iraq and send them to fight for a TRULY noble and legitimate cause in Myanmar? And unlike the Iraqis, the Burmese (and the world) will welcome American troops with open arms and regard them as liberators, not occupiers. Sanctions like those Bush has proposed simply won't be enough. The only way is the military way. The only question is, do Americans have the will to liberate these long suffering people? Or is America's devotion to democracy and human rights just hollow lip service and restricted only to countries with vast oil reserves? PS: If Bush decides to send troops into Myanmar, I pledge to immediately enlist in the military. PPS: Long live Aung San Suu Kyi.
How many people think invading Iraq a mistake, but, we did, and now, to maintain order, we need to stay? Iraq is the worst foreign policy decision, maybe, in U.S. history. I blame both parties, not just the Bush administration, as, there was ample evidence back then by the DIA and CIA that Iraq posed no serious threat. Only 6 Senators even bothered to read the reports from the CIA available to them before casting probably the most important vote of their careers. We might have been more patient with the U.N. sanctions and inspections of facilities in Iraq. But, fact is, we invaded a troubled region. Now, we are there, and 4 years later, it is a mess, but really, no matter, we are there. Should we leave, chaos will ensue, and it is hard to imagine Al Qaeda and enemy factions, THAT CONSIDER US AN ENEMY and given the chance, will attack us with anything they can bring. All told, shouldn't we stick this out, even knowing it was a snafu and fubar beyond comprehension?
Are you in favor or against sending more American troops to Iraq? The USA attacked the sovereign nation of Iraq for other reasons than weapons of mass destruction. Iraq had a debilitated army due to sanctions and was never a threat to the United States. Iraq's "government" can't garauntee peace and order in the streets. In reality, there is anarchy in Iraq. I think everybody should clean up their own mess and so should the United States. They shouldn't charge the Iraqis for the reconstruction of Iraq, after all, they destroyed the infrastructure that garaunteed peace. The Iraq war has killed more civilians than Saddam. Iraq is not better off today. They live in anarchy. Iraqis are people too! They are getting killed because Bush initiated the war and has no idea how to achieve peace. By cleaning their own mess I mean Americans should send more troops. those who are against sending more troops, What kind of state will Iraq become if the American troops are withdrawn? Is this good for the Middle East? The World?
Did China get screwed by the Iraq war? Before the invasion, China had big oil deals with Iraq and was waiting (allegedly) for the UN to end sanctions. Now the US and its allies are in the mix. Coincidence?
When are are we going to stop our incredibly stupid policy in Afghanistan and Iraq? After years of shedding our blood and huge monetary costs, Al Qeda is stronger than ever and the situation In Afghanistan and Iraq far worse than in the first year. The generals are now asking for more troops just as they did in Vietnam We are fighting the enemies' war. The war of civilizations has started and we are losing hands down. The only way to fight it is as we did Communism, a far less threatening creed. Send back all religious enemies and those with incompatible, abhorrent cultures, launch discrediting campaign and impose trade sanctions untill the pips squeak. Have our leaders all gone mad?
Will the economic sanctions be lifted on Iraq? If so, when? US President George W Bush has urged the United Nations to lift economic sanctions on Iraq after US-led forces deposed President Saddam Hussein. Mr Ivanov said he was not opposed to the lifting of sanctions but said a vote by the Security Council, where Russia holds veto power, is required to lift the sanctions. Earlier, the European Union cautiously welcomed the call by the US President. However, the EU has also said the final decision on Iraq sanctions rests with the United Nations.
Does the sanctions send a strong message to North Korea? Is North Korea's nuclear test a threat to world peace? Will sanctions work? I don't think that it will work, North korea is poor enough, sanctions will only starve more people, like in Iraq when 1.5 million people many of them children starved to death because of sanctions. maybe north korea and iran are trying to get nuclear weapons because they have a fear of invasion by the U.S. like iraq. they are probably trying to get nukes because they will be a good deterrent force against the U.S. military action. all because the Bush's axis of evil speech
Why do people think the Iraq war is about oil? What "oil"? Iraq is producing less oil now than it was before the war. If it was about oil the Americans and British could have just had sanctions lifted and purchased the stuff for $2 a barrel. It would have been a bit cheaper in terms of lives and money. You European fools you should try to rationalize yourself before saying America is all about natural resources not true. We Americans care about the potienal democracy of Iraq. Please think for yourseleves Europeans please start watching Bill O Rielly and cut down on that BBC news please. Fox is Fair and Balanced. BBC news was created to make America look evil.
