Why is Saddam Hussein's history of terrorism forgotten? Saddam Hussein's Iraq was listed as a state sponsor of terrorism for over a decade by administrations of both parties, why has the issue become so muddled that now many people proclaim that Hussein had "nothing" to do with terrorism?

Why does the U.S. continue to ignore this country with a long history of terrorism? Ireland! The IRA has been blowing things up for years. Sure they lack the means of resources of certain other terrorists...but they are terrorists. I thought the U.S was leading the war on terror. When will we invade this potato infested country, institute a new government, and spend billions of dollars fighting a ragtag band of rabble rousers? We need a preemptive strike before we are all worshiping leprechauns, kissing blarney stones, making the four leaf clover our national symbol. We as Americans must stand up to this "green threat" and say no! DRAGON 2012 "Great fortune for U.S." No, we cannot wait on Britain to call for help. We need to invade and shut this potential, yet most unlikely threat down now! The longer we wait the more likely it could happen...eventually...possibly....maybe I would say it in New York, I would say in Boston, and anywhere else it need to be said. Let freedom ring. These colors are red, white, and blue...not green.
Is the war on terrorism another red scare? American extremists have used these kinds of crises as a means of putting a patriotic spin on their various issues, from the anti immigrant Know Nothings of the mid 1800s through the Red scares of the 1920s onwards, and now the war on terrorism. History justifies the protests of those who insisted at the time that there was no danger. !850s America survived the influx of mainland Europeans, and there were no huge organizations of Anarchists or Communists in the 1920s or 1930s. A few acts were committed by individual fanatics, usually disgruntled immigrants, with little if any central organization despite any claims to the contrary. This was equally true with the GOP red hunts of Joe McCarthy and Richard Nixon in the 1950s. There was no massive conspiracy in the government, and no danger that the American people could possibly sucumb the the temptations of Communism. So are they at it again? Are these terrorists as serious a threat as the Bush League claims? The was also a bombing on Wall Street during the intitial Red scares of the 1920s. What I am suggesting is that our responses may be carefully nurtured overreactions. The danger that some lives will be lost, and some property damge done will always exist, and always has. Has that reality been exaggerated to justify the abuse of process? PUT BLUNTLY: IS OUR NATURAL FEAR OF ONE GROUP OF FANATICS BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY ANOTHER?
Who perpetrated the greatest act of terrorism in history? When I heard the question, I thought about it for three seconds, and then answered, "Osama Bin Laden and his terror organization Al Qaeida." But guess what? I was wrong. And nope, it wasn't Saddam Hussein, either. It's the US government. And here's why: Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki "Combatant and noncombatant men and women, old and young, are massacred without discrimination by the atmospheric pressure of the explosion, as well as by the radiating heat which result therefrom. Consequently there is involved a bomb having the most cruel effects humanity has ever known. . . . The bombs in question, used by the Americans, by their cruelty and by their terrorizing effects, surpass by far gas or any other arm, the use of which is prohibited. Japanese protests against U.S. desecration of international principles of war paired the use of the atomic bomb with the earlier firebombing, which massacred old people, women and children, destroying and burning down Shinto and Buddhist temples, schools, hospitals, living quarters, etc. . . . They now use this new bomb, having an uncontrollable and cruel effect much greater than any other arms or projectiles ever used to date. This constitutes a new crime against humanity and civilization." Especially because: "The use of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender because of the effective sea blockade and the successful bombing with conventional weapons... The lethal possibilities of atomic warfare in the future are frightening. My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children." Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy, Chief of Staff to President Truman And furthermore: What the US government did to Chile, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Nicaragua, etc. etc. (Wiki may not be the most reliable source, but 99% of what's in the article is pretty accurate. I checked the sources.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_and_state_terrorism#Cuba_.281956-present.29 Forget Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and North Korea, the US government (though not its citizens) is the greatest terror mankind has ever known. Around a QUARTER OF A MILLION Japanese men, women, and children--most of them civilians--were slaughtered by the Americans, so the US government could "make a point" to the Soviets. (Beginning of the Cold War.) Republicrats wake up: Yes, I remember. But the Japanese attacked military institutions, which is of course permissible in war. But it's NOT permissible to kill hundreds of thousands of INNOCENT CIVILIANS, just for effect. And certainly not using ATOMIC BOMBS. Rounder: It WAS politically motivated, and the US government DID kill many hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. Just like what the Al Qaeida are up to today. Loving your country doesn't mean LYING for your country, as some people apparently think. I love my country the USA, but history is history, and I don't try to find excuses for killing 250,000 INNOCENT lives. That's not war, that's all-out terrorism. If it's not, then that word has no meaning.
History thesis on terrorism (need ORIGINAL ideas)? I am in 11th grade and I want to address terrorism, but I need an original thesis. The challenges of the last century were facsism, communism, imperial Japan, Nazism, and totalitarianism. Over 100 million innocents died altogether. I feel that terrorism (even though it is not new) is the most prominant threat today. Groups such as Ahmadinejad, Assad, Hamas, Hezbollah, and al Qaeda are the threat. What should be done? We cannot just sit by and watch last century repeat itself. Don't we need to stop it? If anyone can think of an original thesis regarding the previous thoughts, I would greatly appreciate it!
What are some examples of terrorism influenced through religion? I have to write a paper on occasions where there was terrorism influenced by religion. I want to touch up on different terrorism events throughout history (by talking about ones within different centuries). Was the Albigensian Crusade a form of terrorism? I am definitely going to use 911, but can you think of any other terrorist events in history that was influenced by religion? Thanks is advance.
Don't you agree that Bush will follow Lincoln and Reagan as one of the greatest presidents in history? Both were unpopular presidents. Both were engaged in a war to save America from tyrants. Both had deep convictions. Both were Christian. Both were Republican. It was until Sherman took Atlanta, Lincoln's re-election was certain and if that did not happen the Democrats then were going to cut a deal with the Confederates. Lincoln was not recongnized until he died. I hope it does not take that long for Bush. Reagan was called brain dead and not up to the job, but he won his elections by a landslide. Reagan stared down the big red beast and the commies blinked. Bush stands up to terrorism. History will judge Bush as a great man.
Is there not a history of Christian Terrorism? But yet as a Mulism I still study and respect the Gospels because Allah commands it in the the Holy Qur'an. All I am saying is that whether you are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Atheist or Agnostic and so on, you will have your beliefs misrepresented by a group of "extremists"
History and evolution of Terrorism?? Does anyone know the history and evolution of terrorism showing how the tactics have/or have not changed from the French Revolution to the present??
We have had terrorism for years and this is not a new thing? History is so important but we the American Peopl need to communicate right? So freedom of speech is very important do you agree? But what about the popular concensus that the American Government said we the People must be controlled? What does this mean? Controlled how? Stifle our education? Censor our reading materials? Control the media? What about controlling the terrorism? We have done that many times indeed. So what is their problem?(the Government)? We are a democratic society we have the right to speak out against the policies they are trying to pass over our heads. We all need to research these things and stay on them right?
Anyone know the number of acts of Islamic terrorism in all history, and of any country without any at all? I realize that the number is in the thousands, and they are always causing trouble everywhere...just wondered if anybody had specific figures and geographic data. Of all major and minor conflicts going on around the globe today, around 80% involve Muslims attacking their non-Muslim neighbors, or attacking other Muslims. Can one make a rational argument for benevolent genocide? They will not reform nor acquiesce nor listen to reason nor ever be satisified with mere dhimmitude on the part of non-Muslims....
Did anyone read or listen to the talk by Howard Zinn on The Uses of History and the War on Terrorism? As there were only 5 answers during the time it would take to read or listen to the talk by Howard Zinn maybe nobody is that interested in hearing another view of why we don't feel represented in parliament and why the World is in such a mess and what we ordinary folk can do to bring about change! Surely I'm not alone? If you want another chance go to: http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?s... This link is not malicious it belongs to 'Democracy Now' a reputable organisation just like 'Media Lense' which scrutinisis the press and other media.
Who is Anita Rai,the Author of Jihad and Terrorism? Anita Rai’s 6th book, JIHAD AND TERRORISM is soon coming out. As with every of her other book, this one too stands out in a sea of run of the mill publications on the same subjects. Rai says: “The spirit of Islam is promotion of peace, love and enlightenment and justice for all. Justice is the guiding force of Islam. And its very spirit requires Islam to defend the oppressed and establish the rule of justice in order to facilitate the superior functioning of the law of God for the optimum welfare of His creatures, basically and spiritually – this calls for Jihad, which means striving hard and honest, in the Way of God. Jihad, as preached and practiced by Muhammad, the Messenger of Peace (pbuh) is not necessarily same and similar to its understanding by the Muslims and the non-Muslims down the centuries. Hence, the history of Jihad – its phases, periods, politics and ploys – is very complex, which is not easy to grasp if one does not have the sophistication and depth of knowledge of the very complex and turbulent history of Islam. The why - when - how of jihad transgressing into terrorism is essential because almost always it is mentioned in the same breath as terrorism and even described as an equivalent. JIHAD AND TERRORISM is about portraying the Essential Jihad – illustrated by the Custodians of Islam (p b u them) and the Holy Book – which is averse to terrorism and wages a constant War on terror. So, although we find the history of jihad and the history of terrorism entangled, jihad and terrorism stand for distinctly separate and profoundly different values.”
If Obama becomes the president I think terrorism will be history, What you think? This guy in my opinion will make this country the safest it has ever been. Aside from lifting the spirit of African Americans to work hard and compete for better jobs. We will see few crimes because the poor will have an oppertunity to be rich and the terrorist will never dare to attack because they know that Obama is loved by the world and not just by Americans. Obama brings healing to America and the rest of the world. The World see America as the model of the free world and when they see that Obama is the president will never have a doubt in their mind that America is the greatest country ever ever ever. I like Hillary but she will not have the healing power and lifting power that Obama has. This is a moment in our histry and we got to have it.
Why are people suddenly worried about "terrorism" when it has been going on since 1795? The modern English term "terrorism" dates back to 1795 when it was used to describe the actions of the Jacobin Club in their rule of post-Revolutionary France, the so-called "Reign of Terror". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_terrorism There are several terrorist groups across several periods in history. They have always been here, always will be here and will always be violent. Terrorists are everywhere not just in Iraq (see Oklahoma City Bombing). Why has the recent focus of our government been on averting terrorism when it is nothing new under the sun? Why not spend our resources on improving our own domestic economy and infrastructure?
How long can the World/West feel safe as India continues to turn into a terrorist haven? Can’t the West see through the façade, the Hindu naiveté/lack of leadership; and recognize the hazard from the Power-blocks in India? Apart from political power; certain communities with history of terrorism are buying huge land masses / real estate all over India; making massive financial gains; multiplying their numbers; subverting Hindus through propaganda / false-friendliness / fear-mongering / moral accusations & caste-divisions, to secure strategic Defense / IT positions –thus strengthening their hold. As a result of concerted actions over time, they are successfully converting gullible Hindus to their evil cause . The constitution ensures Hindus will never gain power in their own land, and the ensuing chaos/bad governance/filth of Indian municipalities repels & disgusts sympathetic Westerners. While this may have served strategic colonial interests in the past, it is now threatening world peace.
What's all this uproar about Megrahi about (I need a full explanation please)? Who is Megrahi? What exactly is the lockerbie bombings? (Any older news links would be appreciated) He has prostate cancer, and so was released on compassionate grounds and is now in the care of Libya, who gets to decided whether someone like Megrahi is released or not? What is the main religion is Libya? What religion is Megrahi of? Did he have any history of terrorism before the Lockerbie bombings? Where were the lockerbie bombings? I am finding it difficult to find older news stories, so sorry if these questions seem daft but I would appreciate true, non-patronising, honest, complete explanations.
Why Christians dub that Islam is a terrorism and love killing, while history says the opposite? Why Christians believe that Islam and Muslims are terrorists and they love killing, while history says the opposite. the massacres of the Crusades, the two World Wars ,the genocide of American Indians, indigenous people in Australia, Western colonialism and looting the wealth of peoples, the Holocaust, slavery and racial segregation ,The occupation of Iraq and the killing of thousands and mafia, drugs, rape, child abduction and even rape within the monasteries and churches.
Was the world safer when Britain was the world power? Or was it safer when the world was split into 2 "super powers" Or is has it been safer with the US being the solo super power which seems to have gotten us to this point in history of terrorism etc Or was the world at it's safest when Rome was the only power on the globe ?
Did terrorism get it's start from conservatives? Does Bin Laden need to thank Reagan and Bush? Gotta love nutcase Conservatives. For example, did you know Reagan and George H.W Bush armed, trained, financed Bin Laden and his Mujahadeen in the 80's? Did you know Reagan wussed out and gave in to Iran and gave them arms? You gotta love how Reagan and Bush gave chemical weapons to Saddam. Of course after he ran out and asked for more they finally said no (after over 100,000 deaths). How about our nice nutcase conservatives arming and helping the Taliban. Did you know that the Saudi Royal family which has a long history of supporting terrorism is best friends with the Bushes. How about our boy George Dubya going into business investments with the Bin Ladens (Carlyle Group). Hey conservatives Syria called, they want those WMD's you promised them back. With friends like these who needs Iran. If these morons didn't help out our enemy's would things be a little better for us? Does Bin Laden need to give kudos to Bush for helping him out (good lookin out pal)?
At what point are people going to stop denying the threat terrorists pose? How many attacks will be required? How large must these attacks be? How many people must die? The evidence is spread out before us. We have an enemy who hates us. Their hate is rooted in a religious ideology which cannot be reasoned with and cannot be rationalized. Has America done things to incite some of this hate? Absolutely! However, the root cause goes much deeper than this. America's actions do not explain the total history or terrorism, nor do they explain attacks against other countries (most notably Spain) who have tried unsuccessfully to appease the terrorists. At what point will people stop blaming their own country and wake up to the realistic danger which faces us? I can understand not liking the war or the administration, but these problems and the evidence of their existence well predate both. I also understand not giving in to fear, but isn't denial worse than fear in the long run? bonehead: England has stood with us in the war on terror. Spain withdrew their forces and allowed terrorists to effect their elections and then were still attacked. I welcome all opinions, but at least try to think critically. AlfRed E nEuMaN 4 preSIDent: Interesting tirade, adaquately shows your hate for the president, but does not answer the question. This question was intentionally devoid of partisan sentiment, but I guess some people cannot see past the hate and act in a reasonable manner. No matter this is America, enjoy your right to free speech. right you are ken: Actually I have diminished nothing. I admitted that American actions have contributed to the hate, but here again either you did not read the question or cannot consider the whole, but rather only parts. So is it your contention that American actions caused the Spanish attacks? kent m: See the response above. People answering negatively here are invested in making the whole problem about America. You completely ignore any historical context or other world involvement. You further completely dismiss the religious angle which the terrorists themselves claim allegiance to unfailingly. You indict others as not wanting to address the entire issue when you yourself are just as guilty.
What is the worst country to live in and WHY? Currently, is a strong keyword. Also I hope that answers give proof more so than immigrants want to live in the place (based usually on an unsupported ignorance) or that it has the most opportunities. Lets also take into consideration family values, cultural identity, crime rates, hypocritical democracy, lack of terrorism, poetry, history, art, beauty, health, lack of pollution, lack of military tyranny and give strong examples if we can. Thanks you and I hope to hear your answers
I want to get clued up on history/background to war on terrorism...? I've become interested in the war on terrorism, but I want to know everything from the soviet invasion of afghanistan [when the americans already knew about osama bin laden], to the current situation. i want to know everything about the coalition forces abroad, and terrorist attacks and the politics surrounding it, for example, the fact we are not allowed to deport a man who's a threat to national security because of human rights. I'd like to know it mainly from the British point of view but also from the American point of view. a brief layout of it all with links to more in depth articles of key events etc would be appreciated. i will not tolerate anyone leaving comments abusive to soldiers, so please, before criticising the armed forces or anyone, please get clued up on everything like i am trying to do so now, lest you make an embarrasingly misinformed statement. ps i don't want anything bias. i'll read those books though, but i'm looking more for news articles and archive material.
Terrorism is self defeating as evidenced in History?!? Hey, In my History Coursework I am doing a question that reads "Will the war on terror succed?". I've written most of it yet to get the final marks I must: "Raise the possiblity that terrorism is self defeating as evidenced in History" Any help would be really really appreciated :) Thank you x
people are always talking about "the enemy"........what "enemy are we talking about? Are we talking about.... terrorists? Well, there have been terrorist all through history and there will continue to be throughout the rest of history.....terrorism, poverty, homelessness, crime, disease, drug use, bullying, starvation, greed are all symptoms and conditions and tactics, not enemies, and you cannot fight, or do away with any of them with guns. Right now all we see are two sides of the same coin, two bullies on the playground, two gunslingers out in the street...if the rest of us are lucky, they'll BOTH die! What enemy are we talking about? kathy_is_a_nurs: "destruction of Western society"? why is that surprising? the West has been trying to convert or destroy middle eastern society and culture for a thousand years...
When do you think terrorism will be a history for Muslim or when would that happen for example in Thailand this terrorist blame those Buddisht, in the Philippine and Western countries they blame the Christian , in the Middle East they blame the Jews, In India they blame the Hindu. So what exactly the root of the problem edit not when would that happen but would it be possible so Ibrahim are u saying that violance against violance can establish peace. Have you read the real History of Bosnia, who was the one who cause the trouble To Ibrahim why the Crusader are establish to protect Christian country from those Arab militant they are causing trouble in those country To Ibrahim where did u get those fact from "pure assumption" Look at today Muslim world what is happening to them
Is it possible to weed out terrorism? If it is, how would you prescribe doing it? Seems to me terrorism has always been in our midst. It has been the weapon of choice whenever people felt they were up against someone whom they couldn't possibly win against or win over through conventional means. Much of history is littered with religious terrorism or state terrorism. The current war on terrorism is bogus and a failure -- it has simply transferred to a different location. Killing terrorists only seems to spawn more terrorists. At the very least, it does not eliminate the root cause that makes people resort to terrorism. How do we address the root cause and how do we resolve conflicts to bring about a lasting peace?
any tips on my thesis statement?? Chaos was running through the big city! Smoke and fames rose rapidly through the frantic and tense air. A plane had just crashed horribly into the Northern Tower of the world famous, World Trade Center, leaving many astonished and many others clueless that thousands of pounds of rubble was about to come crashing down on them. Crash! A second plane utterly destroyed the Southern Tower of the amazing World Trade Center. People were jumping from the building is some hope of surviving. Soon a call was made to stop all planes. Land them and do not allow them to leave the ground. But the call came too late. Moments later a plane crashed into the pentagon. These building were all horribly destroyed. Soon the gigantic towers would collapse leaving weeks worth of rubble to rummage through, and years worth of devastation to face. What is happening? 9-11 is happening. An important date in American and world history. Terrorism is a very tremendous problem in the issues of our daily life, military, politics, and social views in the United States of America.
why do you hate/don't respect islam and muslims? A-you were taught since you was young to do that. B-you researched into islam and your thinking lead you to that. C-the fallback of the muslim countries, so you're feeling superior. D-the current events and terrorist attacks. **by the way we muslims are ordered to respect the other heavenly (Godly) religions , if your answer is: (a)then you should do research about what they told you and hear from both sides. (b)if you research the right way an read for both sides , i'm sure you respect islam , unless you read only the bad sources. (c)western countries fellback when islam was at its goden age of knowledge , so it's obvious that progress is exchanged and not limited to a certain religion , but if you apply it right. (d)look through the history , terrorism was there before any religion , mongols(tattar) , crusaders , roman rulers , hitler , all weren't muslims , i asure you islam calls for peace , all these terrorist attacks in the name of islam isn't true as they contradict all its teachings by their actions , if you research you'll find all wars waged by muslims were to defend their country , on those who break the truths and not to spread islam by force as alleged , or else why didn't all the people who were said to be forced return to their original religions when the islamic countries were conquered. - in fact that was i expected which supports what i said actually nearly none of you have even came close to what islam is... you take PARTS of the quran not even completing the rest of the sentence , example it says "don't pray" but to understand the meaning you should complete the sentence "don't pray when you are drunk". -for the terrorist thing , you didn't bother to read my details , they are extremists explaining quran as they wish , in fact as you just did here -no even one word in quran or hadith calls for killing innocents , in fact the orders of the prophet whan at war not to kill a woman a child or an old man , not to harm who didn't harm us whatever their religions. -plus muslims don't hate christians as you think , we respect followers of the previous prophets , believe in them and their books , which is actually obligations to being a muslim , but sure if you disrespect me i'll hate you. -i see that muslims have gave a corrupt picture about islam , don't judge it by them.
about EGYPT'S TERRORISM HISTORY? ezat hanafy_mouslim bro groubs_louxor accidents please guys i need your help need the full storys about the counter terrorism in egypt in the past 20 years at least headlines don't forget to star if course if u don't have enough information only
In the battle against terrorism both Iran and Syria are sponsors. Why? What's the History? Radicalism began in the 20th Century. What caused it? Iran is a theocratic, militant Islamic state and Syria is a secular nationalist state. They both sponsor terrorism. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it! Recent History of the Middle East Parts 1 and 2 expllain this. It's a brief history of the 20th Century focused on the events which led up to current day Iraq and our challenges there: War on Terror Blog http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-DfkctJU7dK5B7LcNROoyVQ--?cq=1 No politics. Just the groundtruth from one that has been to both fronts in the War on Terror. I'll be around to tomorrow to respond to your answers before choosing. Coragryph: What planet are you living on? Or do you mean by pre-2004, actually pre-1979? If Saudi Arabia is a state sponsor of Al-Qaeda, why is Al-Qaeda attacking them so much? and so much more post 9/11? (see my previous article on statistics) You didn't even read my article to see what my premises were. You should have and then instead of defending Iran and their islamicist theocracy, you might be demanding that your politicians take on the cause of National Security rather raw politics. That is the worst argument I've seen you make but I've come to expect you to form reasonable answers, even if wrong or devoid of significant parts of your true beliefs to get a 'best answer.'
How does the knowledge about the differences between modern and traditional terrorism help in? As a newly hired planner in a homeland security unit of a large city police department (think Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles), part of your job is to anticipate terrorist attacks in your city. How does the knowledge about the differences between modern and traditional terrorism help you in your job? What events from history (cite at least two) might have relevance to a large diverse, American city in 2009? Why?
What IS the solution to defeat terrorism? To my way of thinking, if people in the world who currently live in inhumane conditions had a decent living environment, access to good education and real possibilities to be employed, there would be considerably less anger against countries, governments and systems and therefore less people to become involved in terrorism. When I see an area, in this case, Lebanon, being bombed (rightly or wrongly) I can only think of the subsequent terrible living conditions that ordinary human beings will have to endure and who they will seek to avenge for the destruction of their world. Get the picture? So, how about instead of bombs, we (or in this example, Israel) spends money on building hospitals, schools etc and is seen to be HELPING the impoverished neighbors they have. The same is true of us in the West. Instead of war lets spend the billions of dollars on helping to improve the lives of the poor and then we might actually get nearer to Bono's ideal which is to "make poverty history".
what should i write about in my history research paper? i have to write an 8-10 page paper for history, but i don't know what to write on. i was thinking of writing about cyber terrorism, but how do i relate that to history? does anyone have ideas of what i could write about or how to write about cyber terrorism? thanks.
Who is the worst terrorist in history? I'm doing a report about terrorism for a class project. I am trying to gather information from other people on who might be the worst terrorist in history.
Do you think "Anti-Terrorism" will go down in history as the McCarthyism of our age? For those too young to remember, a fellow named Joseph McCarthy got a little wild about hunting down "Communists" and anti-Americans. He went way overboard and, I believe, insane based because you could make just about anyone out to be anti-american if you watched them long enough. So, it seems the same with the word Terrorist. The foundation of this thought comes from the Obama/Ayers association. Obama barely knows the guy (Ayers). Ayers said is. Ayers friends said it. Obama said it. They hardly know each other and yet there is this witch hunt going on. Does it seem like the word Terrorism is being mutated to mean just about anyone? I'll bet you don't know everything about everyone you know....
Why is President Bush such a coward in the face of terrorism? Islamic fundamentalists would enjoy seeing western constitutional government crumble. Seeing our liberties, rights, forms of justice and government dismantled from within by President Bush and the Republican party must fill terrorists with pride and joy! President Bush is failing to defend our cherished principles; abandoning habeas corpus, rights of privacy, human rights, liberty, justice, and constitutional checks and balances because he's afraid of terrorists! These must be DEFENDED in the face of terrorism to SPITE the terrorists; otherwise, the terrorists win. Who will be courageous enough to stand-up for our legal principles in the face of terrorism? Obviously not the Republican party or President Bush. They are simply cowards in the face of terror doing the terrorists dirty work for them, destroying our liberties in order to "save" them. Terrorists are playing our President for the greatest fool in the history of western civilization, and it's working. Wow...excellent answer turnout! Best answer is going be tough. For those who still can't comprehend the question, I thought of an analogy: President Bush is defending the U.S. like a President of a bank trying to protect the bank from robbers by burning all the cash. Sure, the robbers won't get any cash, but everyone loses their deposits anyway, so what's the point? You can't save the bank by destroying the bank. President Bush is destroying our cherished legal, ethical and constitutional principles in the name of "saving" them. Bin Laden and other fanatics are now able to say, "See, they don't practice what they preach!" The President should have had the courage and the conviction to face the terrorists and say, "We are not like you. We don't spy on our people, we don't torture our people, we don't kill innocent people without due process of law." The President should have said, "We will defeat you and we will defeat you the American way!" Otherwise, what's the point?
Do You Guys Really Think We are Winning the War on Terrorism? Honestly, iraq seem like a complete failure, i don't know why we were there in the first place. and the patriot act is nonsense. Do you really think we are winning the war on terrorism by listening in on people's private phone conversations, and viewing their search history? All of which McCain Supports.
Should the Neo-cons can stop dreaming - history will not look kindly on President Bush? A 513-page report details the "$100 billion Bush/Cheney failure" of Iraq's reconstruction. Their apologists argue, history will vindicate Bush and Cheney just as it exonerated Truman and Marshall. It may take a couple of decades, but future McCulloughs will come to recognize that the Bush-Cheney invasion of Iraq was transformative - and that torturing suspects was the only real way to fight terrorism. Meantime the Midwest will be to GOP hope chest in future elections after industries started collapsing there under Bush.
Why are Iran and Syria so important in the future and history of Iraq as seen in the present?
Why do people care about terrorists or terrorism? On and on people go about how 9/11 was one of the worst thing to happen ever in history, about how afraid they are of terrorists, about how they want to get revenge really bad. I ask myself what makes americans have such an incredibly narrow world view. Do people not understand that genocide is happening is Darfur, Sudan. The next time you think how awful 9/11 was think about the more ignored killings: Bosnian Genocide Rwandan Genocide Darfur conflict Herero and Namaqua Genocide Native american Genocide Holocaust Circassian ethnic cleansing Serbian Genocide Armenian Genocide Japanese war crimes in China 1939 Countless other african tribal conflicts. I have no fear of terrorism... I fear the ignorance of people in my country.
why do people think Guantanamo Bay prevents terrorism ? i think it does the opposite it gives people a reason to hate us the Taliban were 'freedom fighters' according to John McCain the cia supported terrorism becasue it kept Russia at bay i think 'terrorism' has become a propaganda tool you would think that 21st C citizens would have enough knowledge of history to realize history is repeating itself more than 50% of the world's military spending is by us how can people think that 3rd world military is a serious threat to our national security ?
Do white people think racial economic differences have nothing to do with history? Honestly, when white people consider the economic disparity between whites and blacks, do you guys think it has nothing to do with slavery which gave way to Southern terrorism (lynching) which begat segregation which begat white flight which begat discriminatory housing policy (especially in the post-Depression era when many Americans had to start from scratch) which begat lower-funded public schools in the segregated black areas which is the beginning of the cycle that produces crime and poverty. This is not about making white folks feel guilty or even finding a solution to these problems really. I just wonder how many even good-natured white folks think "history has nothing to do with the way things are today". Sometimes it just seems that they think things that happened before 2003 don't effect attitudes and circumstances today. Great answers, Qwerty especially... the myth that one's success is based on individual merit isn't true. It's not all about where you start but a nice beginning helps. To a previous response, it's not about producing more "white guilt" but maybe "white realization" which may cause them to not look down upon those screwed over a little bit by the aftershock of the past. GEM: I'm talking about the effects on a culture, not so much individuals. Hell, even in the 1800s you had Frederick Douglass... but in the circumstances back then, you weren't going to have millions of Frederick Douglass's popping out of plantations. TomT. Thoughtful, and a productive way to view things but sport is not really a good analogy. Sport, to a large extent, has NEVER been about WHO you know, but what you can do, especially when so few can compete at a high level. That's why racism in sport broke down relatively early. Most other paths of life are a LOT about who you know and your network, in fields where many can perform the same job capably. Trinco, Chicago is/was a MAJOR "white flight area": Blacks flee the South to Chi. beginning 30s and 40s -> get blue-collar jobs alongside whites, but segregated into shabbier communities and intentionally underfunded schools (housing) so forth and so on... Effect of history very strong.
Is American military power with Obama as Commander in Chief doomed to the likes of the French miltary history? A brief history of the French miltary: Gallic Wars Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian. [Or at ths time in history, a Roman -ed.] Hundred Years War Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted. Thirty Years War France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her. War of the Spanish Succession Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved every since. American Revolution In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting." French Revolution Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French. World War I Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States [Entering the war late -ed.]. Thousands of French women find out what it's like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline. World War II Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song. War on Terrorism France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonald's.
Is the fuzzy distinction between war, terrorism, and who commits it anything new? Since it is usually the victorious and powerful countries who get to write the history books, can we really say that our fuzzy definitions of what constitutes war and what constitutes terrorism is anything new? For instance, I would think that if any other country but the US had attacked Iraq without UN sanction that we would not be discussing it as a legitimate act of war, but of terrorism. However, since we do it, and we are the good guys, it must be legitimate war. Sorry, that is not the best example in the world, but its all I can think of right now. Is it safe to say that what constitutes war and what constitutes terrorism are solely defined by the most powerful and victorious nation? Conan-- please read the post I wrote, and not the post you want to think I wrote. In no way did I ever suggest that 9/11 wasn't terrorism. It was pure and simple. However, 9/11 and our rogue attack against Iraq, if not comparable, only because as horrible and as much suffering as 9/11 wrought, we lost 3000 people and a few buildings. Iraq has lost depending on estimates between 30,000 and 100,000 people and most of their infrastructure. I'm sorry. There isn't a comparison there. And if you can't see how the loss of tens of thousands of Iraqis is worse than the loss of 3000 Americans, than I have no way to communicate to you the worth of all human life.
Why do so many people insist on equating modern Islamic terrorism with the Crusades? We're talking about TODAY, people...not a millenium ago. Western kids and Muslim kids both learn about the Crusades in school. The difference is that here, they read about them in World History, whereas the Muslim kids apparently study them in Current Events. Princess: The only problem with that is that Catholics ARE Christians,,,the original ones to be exact, but that's a discussion for a different forum. marcia: I too want to see Roe overturned, and a minimum wage only hurts the poorest Americans.
This is my introduction and my first point/definition of state terrorism. Is it alright? You’re either with us or with the terrorists: Defining the term “terrorism” The Monday morning rush hour was in full force, the subway trains rolling. For thousands of citizens, the relaxing weekend trips to the beach and the zoo were still in their minds. One individual had other thoughts on his mind. The weekend was spent making last preparations for a plan that will forever change the lives of him and the thousands of people standing right next to him. He was sweating bullets and clearing his throat constantly, yet, nobody was giving him suspicious looks. At last, a train came to a stop at the station he was residing at. He entered the train calmly, allowing others to enter ahead of him. When the train left the station, it was down to business. He reached into his pocket, where he kept the detonation device. Terrorism has been taking place in the world for centuries. Ever since the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the word terrorism has become a feared word. There isn’t a day that goes by that goes by where the word terrorism isn’t used by the main stream media. But, how is the word terrorism defined? The Oxford English Dictionary (1989) defines terrorism as “A policy intended to strike terror against whom it is adopted”. This paper will introduce to you three different types of terrorism: state, domestic and international by defining them and giving examples of each and with the information I will define terrorism in my own words. Government Involvement When a person usually thinks about terrorism, they think about a small group whose views are so rare and outrageous, that they use force and fear to become known or to become more powerful. But many times governments, including the United States, use violence against innocent people. P. Simpson (2002) defines state terrorism in his article “The war on terrorism: Its moral justification and limits” as “acts of violence used by governments and government forces against parts of their own people or against other peoples” (p. 11). Many governments do not believe that what they are doing is a form of terrorism. They use their power to invite or end wars by killing innocent civilians. If you were to look at World War II, you could see many forms of state terrorism. World War II officially began after Nazi Germany invaded neighboring Poland on September 1, 1939. Two days later, on September 3, Britain declared war on Germany. “The London Blitz, 1940” (2001) describes that Adolf Hitler planned on a bombing campaign on the city of London to demoralize the British citizens and call for a surrender. The bombing on London began on September 7, 1940 and for 57 days they were constantly being bombarded. Over 177,000 citizens were placed in bomb shelters during the night to protect them from the bombardment. On May 11, 1941, all bombing on the British capital was ceased due to Germany’s new campaign on the eastern front against the Russians (para. 1-2). This act would be defined as an act of state terrorism because of the motives behind the bombing of London. Hitler wanted to demoralize the citizens of Britain. The campaign was not intended to take out military bases, equipment, etc. Though history defines the Axis powers of World War II as the “bad” side, a nation on the Allied powers also used state terrorism to end the war for good. With the War in Europe already over, the United States could finally focus entirely on the Pacific, where the Japanese were putting up a good fight. President Harry Truman had to make a decision that would eventually end the war in the Pacific. He decided to drop an atomic bomb in Japan. According to “The atomic bombing of Hiroshima”, (n.d.) on August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m. an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. Hiroshima had a population of 300,000 civilians and there were about 43,000 soldiers stationed in or around Hiroshima. 70,000 people were initially killed by the blast and within five years over 200,000 people died resulting from the explosion (para. 1-2, 6). This event right here is quite arguable on whether or not it is a form of state terrorism. We were engaged in a war with Japan at the time, so you could argue that it was an act of war. The thing is that there were 300,000 innocent citizens residing in Hiroshima. They did nothing wrong and didn’t deserve to be killed. When at war, you are fighting the opposite military, not the citizens living in the country you are at war with.
