What is the difference between divestment from a country and imposting sanctions on a country?

Recently, I read an editorial in which the writer said the US should divest from countries that support or do business with other countries or groups that engage in terrorism. The writer said that some in Congress want to do this but business interests and some of our allies quietly lobby against it. How is divestment different from imposing sanctions? Or are they really the same?

  1. Divestment is getting rid of ownership. Sanctions is not trading Say you own stock in Exxon... divesting is getting rid of your stock Sanctions is not buying gas from them (or selling oil rigs to them)
